The same establishment that just blamed the current US president for the deaths on board Flight 752 outside Tehran jumped to quibble with his spokesman for saying the Obama administration had killed the Libyan leader.
It all began with White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley arguing that “Democrats did not ask or care” when President Barack Obama “killed” Muammar Gaddafi – or Osama bin Laden, or American citizen and jihadist preacher Anwar al-Awlaki, for that matter – without congressional approval, despite no threat of “imminent attacks,” which was the Trump administration’s justification for last week’s drone strike against Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.
Rather than question Gidley over proof, or lack thereof, that Soleimani was a terrorist planning some kind of imminent attack, Democrats and mainstream media journalists went with the “akshully, Obama didn’t kill Gaddafi” angle.
Except he did: it was a US Predator drone that targeted the Libyan leader’s convoy in Sirte, firing a number of Hellfire missiles. That was followed by a pair of French bombers. The wounded and cornered Gaddafi was then finished off by local jihadist militants, whose rebellion NATO supported in the name of democracy and human rights. They proceeded to mutilate his body and parade it around on a spike.
Hillary Clinton, who was Secretary of State at the time, cackled and quipped, “We came, we saw, he died!” when she found out, taking credit for it. Libya has been a chaotic hellhole of civil war ever since.
If one really wants to be technical about it, it wasn’t Barack Obama personally who killed Gaddafi – but that’s both a straw man and a distinction without a difference.
If we want to effectively challenge Trump propaganda on murdering Soleimani, the answer is not parroting Obama propaganda on murdering Gaddafi. Gaddafi was killed after US-led NATO forces bombed his convoy & gave intel to allies on the ground. So US played major role in killing. https://t.co/xY4HSYpLcr
are people really doing Fake Outrage at the idea Obama “killed Gaddafi” when NATO overthrew his govt and bombed his convoy so NTC could capture him and sodomize him with a bayonet before killing him. Hogan’s a dipshit but come on folks let’s not rewrite history! https://t.co/0VjVdAcCrE
The affronted insistence on this technicality is especially galling given that just a day before, the very same media-Democrat establishment blamed President Donald Trump personally for the deaths of 176 people on board the Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 that crashed outside Tehran.
While uncritically accepting the unsubstantiated claim by anonymous Pentagon and intelligence sources that the plane was brought down by an Iranian missile, members of Congress and the #Resistance alike insisted that this had to be Trump’s fault, because had he not killed Soleimani, Iran would not have launched missiles against US troops in Iraq and then panickedly expected American retaliation… or something.
By way of example, Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-California) called it “yet another example of collateral damage from the actions that have been taken in a provocative way by the president of the United States.”
She wasn’t the only one with this view, either.
Innocent civilians are now dead because they were caught in the middle of an unnecessary and unwanted military tit for tat.
My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of all 176 souls lost aboard this flight. https://t.co/zWaVgWxfdL
The world needs to understand that Trump is responsible for the downing on the UA flight that killed 176 civilians. He was reckless and impulsive and needs to be held to account. https://t.co/GjFZMKdZgD
While this may seem like a textbook case of seeking a mote in someone else’s eye while ignoring the beam in one’s own, reality may actually be even worse. More than mere hypocrisy, this kind of twisted logic suggests a “who/whom” mindset, a world in which “our” guy – Barack Obama, in this case – can do no wrong while “theirs” – Donald Trump – can do no right.
And then they wonder why the American people don’t trust journalists.
